16th Middlesex arrived in France in November, 1915 as part of 100 Brigade, 33rd Division but in April 1916 they transferred to 86 Brigade, 29th Division who were in the line around Auchonvillers on the Somme. Between 25th and 28th April, 16th Middlesex were in the front line trenches here and on being relieved they marched back to Acheux. The following day, 29th April, they were on the march along country roads to billets in Mailly-Maillet when one man, Reginald Honiatt, was killed in an accident.
